Will you give God a loan? –

We thank Allah that we have been given the chance to attend one more Ramadan, an incredible chance to increase in degree in Jannah and get freed from hellfire.

Today I will talk mainly about one verse

Allah azzawajal in the Quran talks multiple times about giving charity and he uses different terms to describe or motivate believers to spend. For instance, he says:

و أنفقوا في سبيل الله

spend in the path of Allah

struggle with yourself with your monies

but one of the most unique phrases that Allah used to describe charity was actually mentioned twice, once in surah Baqarah and once a Suret Al-Hadid which is very difficult to comprehend,

Allah says:

Who will give Allah a good loan

The Arabic language has many words to describe a loan but the word used here Kard is coming from the word ‘Korada’ which is the tiny bit that the mouse might take from your bread. It bites a little bit off.

And from it developed the term ‘Kard’ meaning you’re not being asked for most of what you have or all of what you have you’re being asked for a tiny little bit of a slice of what you have. And this little thing can actually mean a lot to the one taking it. It can mean the entire day’s sustenance for the mouse but it’s nothing for the one who owns the bread.

Allah is using this term to say if there is anyone out there who is going to give Allah a loan! Which is impossible. Because we know that

Allah owns all kingdom and all ownership within the skies and the Earth. In fact the one being asked, you and me are actually owned by Allah. When our bodies are not our own, the heart isn’t beating because we are controlling it, Allah gave us the body and the life, and he takes it back whenever he wants.

That’s Allah and he’s the one asking me for a loan, it becomes impossible to understand. Because in any other conventional sense when someone asks for a loan, he is the one in need and Allah says:

و الله الغني و أنتم الفقراء

And Allah is the one who doesn’t need, and you are the ones who have nothing, yet he is the one asking for a loan.

And when the one who has given you everything, is asking you just for a loan, this implies that he knows how greedy we have become, he knows that when you pay the first thing you say is when do I expect it back.

Because as human beings when we get possession of something even temporarily we tend to forget that it’s not ours. Allah gives and Allah gives and Allah gives and then sometimes he says give me back yet the first thought that crosses our mind is ‘it’s mine’ , ‘you want me to give from my money’ ‘you want me to give you from my savings I worked hard for?’ so Allah Azza WA JAL acknowledges the inherit greed:

و من يوق شح نفسه

Whoever can be protected from the deep greed that they have, have reached success.

So Allah is telling you to give even a little and that you are going to get it back because it’s just a loan, and this is confirming the Hadith of the prophet

When you give charity, your wealth doesn’t go down.

So it’s not going to hurt you in any way, but we think it’s going to hurt us, why do we feel that? Because

Quran says the Shytan comes to you and me and says you will be poor when you give for such and such to Allah.

Allah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knowing.

But Allah says قرضا حسنا  a Good loan, and in a good loan I am going to borrow some money from you but I don’t specify when I am paying it back, it can be tomorrow, and can be after 10 years, and you are too generous to me so you say pay me whenever you can. You give me the money and let it go. Allah wants you to trust him. How am I gonna get it back? When am I gonna get it back? I don’t know. Some might think, okey so I pay now and I’ll only get the reward after judgment day, but Allah didn’t say that. Allah simply says:

Allah will multiply it for him! Whoever will pay Allah this loan, Allah won’t pay it back in full, Allah will pay you multiply what you gave, and this is basically what is called ‘Rebba’. And Reba between human beings is Haram, if you borrowed from me a hundred and I want back 200, this is Rebba I can’t do that but Allah says:

يمحق الله الربا و يربي الصدقات

Allah does Reba to charity, he multiplies it and grows it! The best way to increase your wealth and anything you have in life is to give, Allah promises he will multiply and Allah didn’t specify when or how. It’s up to Allah when he’s going to give, and you have complete trust that he will give, and not just give back but give way more than what you gave. And in business, you have to pay money first to make returns, and there is always a risk of not making the money back. Yet when you give to Allah, Allah is guaranteeing that he’s going to multiply your investment many many times. But the only challenge is that Allah is not telling you when or how.

Because we may be giving money, and Allah can be giving you back in Money as well, or maybe what Allah gives you back is health or peace in the family, maybe Allah will give you something much more valuable and dearer than money, something you can never buy with money.

Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knowing.

What to Spend

And when you spend

Pay from whatever Allah has given you and left you in charge of.

Allah has promised if you are thankful, he will indeed increase you. And to be thankful for the blessing of Allah you need to giving back from it

Allah has given you money, then pay back, Allah has given you energy and time utilize it to helping others. Allah has given you knowledge and talent share it with others. Allah wants you to give from all of that. And he promises to increase whatever are paying.

One of the blessings of the month of Ramadan is,

Allah choses some people to releases from Hel fire, and this is every single night.

So this charity you give, may be the reason Allah releases you from Hellfire

The prophet said,

“Protect yourself from hell-fire even by giving a piece of date as charity.”

And when he was asked, which charity is the best? He said:

“The charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy.”

Thus don’t wait till you are on your death bed to give money, and don’t wait to become rich enough to pay, the best charity you can give and the dearest to Allah is when you are low or middle class, and you are afraid of poverty and wishing for wealth, yet you decide to give money. Allah appreciates this charity much more than when you are already rich.

Give your best

And when you give out it’s important to make it in the best possible way, Aesha رضي الله عنها  used to put perfume on the charity before she gives it away. She said the charity falls into the hands of Allah before it reaches the person asking for it.

Keep this in mind when you are giving away clothes or goods, pick the best item you have to give to Allah. Allah says:

“And do not aim toward the defective or bad things and give away

In Al-Imran Allah says:

لن تنالو البر حتي تنفقوا مما تحبون

(3:92) By no means shall you attain piety or righteousness, until you spend of that which you love; and whatever of good you spend, Allah knows it well.

Day of Judgement

On the day of Judgement, the shade of a believer will be nothing but his charity

Allah is telling us in the Quran when a believer dies he calls to Allah

Oh Allah if only you can delay me to a short period so I can give in charity and be a righteous person.

Thus it’s a chance for us while alive to spend more in charity and make it a constant habit to pay a portion of our wealth or income regularly.

One of the 7 people Allah will cover with his shade on the day of judgement when there will be no shade but his shade is

“a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given”

Ramadan:

My dear brothers the month of Ramadan has started, and Allah multiplies the good deeds in this holy month, and Allah frees souls from hellfire.

The believers should compete to make the best use out of this month, and aims to not let an hour or a minute slip from the month without remembering Allah.

In this month we should fast properly by abstaining not only from food and drinks, but also from doing any harm to anyone. We should perform fard prayers on time, and seek to pray night prayer every single night of Ramadan, and seize any opportunity to help anyone in need or give in charity and do it. We should fill our waiting times and unutilized minutes by Zekr and remembrance of Allah and would come out of Ramadan as a new person who has changed towards the better and taken steps closer to Allah. And have a proper intention to do all of that for the sake of Allah alone.

Oh Allah allow all of us to benefit as much as we possibly can of this month. Oh Allah make it a means of our continued guidance….  and a means of forgiveness…..  and a means by which our hearts are softened, not just towards Allah but also towards one another.
