Repentance in Islam –

It’s narrated that a very old man who was that close to death,, came walking with a stick to the prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم   asking him,, I have committed severe sins in my life, severe major sins, if it is to be divided on the entire humanity هلكو جميعا  they would all perish,, is there a way out for me? The prophet said,أتشهد ألا إله إلا الله   do you now believe that there is no God but Allah and that I am his Messenger, he said yes I believe, the prophet said, يبدلها الله لك حسنات  All your sins will be turned to good deeds,, the man was shocked, and kept saying but what about my major sins, and the prophet said “your sins will be turned to good deeds”

(25:70) Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good.

And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd used to be a highwayman whose profession was to rob houses and travelers, one day he climbed a house and while up there, he listened to a person reciting Quran saying

Has not the time come for those who believe,
that their hearts should be humbled and submitted (to Allah)…?

When he heard this, Al-Fudayl said,بلي ان يا رب  “Indeed my Lord, it is time.” So he left, seeking a night’s shelter he found himself at some ruins, and overheard some travelers saying “we should Wait here until the morning, Al-Fudayl operates in this area, he will rob us.” Al-Fudayl listened to that and felt how severely in sin he was,, and decided from that moment to repent to Allah

Al-Fudayl Ibn Eyad became one of the most righteous people of his time and a great scholar, and was described as شيخ الإسلام  by الإمام الذهبي  may Allah them both.

Don’t despair from the mercy of Allah:

سبحان الله  today you hear many people saying “there’s no point in stopping my sin because I’ve wronged so much I don’t deserve God’s forgiveness, God will never forgive me.”

How can anyone think that way, when Allah رب العزة says in the Holy Qur’an over and over again that He is All-Forgiving and Most Compassionate? How can you lose faith in Allah’s  mercy  رب العزة ? He created you and He knows your weaknesses and your faults.

Allâh said :

« O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves by sinning !

Do not despair of the mercy of Allâh,

for Allâh is the One Who forgives ALL  the  sins

He is the Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. »

What have u done?? Think of the biggest of the sins you have ever done.,,,,,,,,., and then remember the saying of Allah

“And verily my Mercy embraces all things.”

If you are a sinner, or even severely immersed in sins,, there is just 1 step between you and the mercy of Allah ,, 1 door,, this door to repentance is wide open, and it is as wide as the Heavens and the Earth,, and it will continue to be open till the sun rises from the west…….

The bad of a sin

One of the reasons we need to continuously do repentance is to clean our heart from the consequences of sinning,, When a believer commits a sin, it leaves a black spot on his heart, as mentioned in Hadith Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه , . but once he refrains from it, seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart is cleansed from it. But if he returned to the sins, the black dot would expand until it covers his entire heart. And this is what is meant in the Suret El Motafefen:

So my dear brothers, keep that in mind,, and ask yourself,, are there any sins that I used to do in the past and didn’t repent from? Do repent from it now,, and clean your heart from it and whenever you do a sin,, immediately turn to your lord and repent and seek his forgiveness,,

When we study the story of Adam in the Quran,, we learn that Adam made a mistake and dis-obeyed his Lord by eating from the tree,, yet he immediately regretted it and repented to his Lord

(2:37) Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance.

Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Allah wants you

Do you want Allah to love you?

Verily Allah,, LOVES those who continuously repent!

Always hold on to repentance,, make it a habit saying أستغفر الله  meaning “Forgive me my Lord” when you are waiting in a queue or in a traffic light, keep your tongue busy with it, The prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم  used to say أستغفر الله  70 times everyday and night even-though he is completely forgiven.

And keep in mind no matter how big the sin is, and even if it was done over and over for so long time.  Remember:

(4:27) And Allah desires to forgive you

Remember that Allah is more merciful with his servants than the mother is with her children

“Allah, the Exalted, stretches His Hand during the night so that those who commit sins by day may repent, and He stretches His Hand in the day so that those who commit sins by night may repent. He keeps doing so until the sun rises from the West”

Every night during the last one-third of the night; Allah رب العزة  descends to the lowest heaven and asks:   هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ

It there any one asking for my forgiveness so I can forgive him?

Is there anyone asking me for anything so I can give it to him?

Is there anyone seeking to repent so I can accept his repentance?

Till the dawn time,, and that’s every night…

Do you really have something in mind you want to ask Allah for?,, do you have a sin that you keep getting back to and sincerely want to repent from,, Talk directly to your Lord When other people are asleep,, Talk to him, and ask for his forgiveness and seek his mercy..

(2:186) And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the supplicant of those who calls upon Me.

The One who repents from a sin is like the one who has not committed any sin.

Steps for sincere  repentance

My dear brothers,, what is the proper way of doing repentance, There are three steps to ensure that our repentance is sincere, consistent and successful?

Number 1 is to STOP DOING the sin, you can’t be repenting at the same time of committing the sin

Number 2 is to deeply and truly regret doing the sin

Number 3, have a sincere will to do your best not to do it again,,

And in case the sin involved taking the rights of other people, then one must return the rights back to the person involved. You can’t say I’ve stolen the inheritance of my brothers, but I have sincerely repented now, no you need to first give the rights back before repenting. If you have beaten someone or insulted someone, seek their forgiveness for the repentance to be complete. And if you can’t find them anymore then you make دعاء  to them..

Do you know what happens when you repent to Allah?

(4:110)” And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seeks Allah’s Forgiveness, he will find Allah Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Not that only but all the years of doing that bad deed are converted into good deeds. Could Allah be more merciful??

Repeated sin

But what if I returned back to the sin after I have sincerely repented from the sin and regretted doing it? The answer is simple, repent again and again and again till the sun comes up from the west.

It’s narrated by the prophet صلي الله عليه و سلم  that “If somebody commits a sin and then says, ‘O my Lord! I have sinned, please forgive me!’ and his Lord says,

‘My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven him’ Then after a while he again commits a sin and says, ‘O my Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,’ and Allah says,’My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven him. Then after a while he commits another sin (for the third time) and says, ‘O my Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,’ and Allah says, ‘My slave has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for it I therefore have forgiven My slave,

he can do whatever he likes.”

And listen to this beautiful

“O son of Adam! I shall go on forgiving you so long as you pray to Me and aspire for My forgiveness whatever may be your sins.

O son of Adam! I do not care even if your sins should pile up to the sky and should you seek forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you.

O son of Adam! If you come to Me with an earthful of sins and meet Me, not associating anything with Me in worship, I will certainly grant you as much forgiveness as will fill the earth.”‘

My dear brothers,,

“All the sons of Adam are sinners,

but the best of sinners are those who continuously repent.”

I ask Allah to make us among those who continuously repent from their sins, I ask Allah accept our repentance and grant us Gannah,, I ask Allah to give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.
